The Office Us Complete Series Plus Bonus CommentariesThe first time it seems sort of blah, but if you watch the whole 1st season, by episode 4 or 5 you pick up on the style of humor and realize that it lies mainly in the simple throwaway lines that the abhorrent David Brent and other employees of Wernham Hogg's Slough branch utter throughout the show. Also, like Gosford Park, the dialogue is very quiet and to an American not used to British accents it is tremendously helpful to put on the subtitles to understand what the characters are saying (it also makes the cringeworthy things that much more cringeworthy when you see them written out). Once you get the humor further viewing will allow you to appreciate the horror of "The Office." Watching all of Season 2 in a marathon viewing session left me so emotionally drained (even though I have never laughed harder in my life) that I was crying by the end and I couldn't tell if they were tears of sadness or laughter. At the same time I was relishing David Brent's demise, the new levels of obsequiousness and insensitivity he descends to by the end of the series is almost painful to watch. The beauty of "The Office" is it mixes some of the most hilarious sitcom humor with a level of epic tragedy that is hard to capture in any performing art form and does it so effortlessly that it is hard to tell where one begins and one ends. Relive every one of your favorite moments, including Michael's (Steve Carell) infamous encounter with a breakfast grill, Dwight's (Rainn Wilson) power plays, Jim's (John Krasinksi) pranks, Andy's (Ed Helms) struggles with anger management, and of course, Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim's evolving romance. ![]() ![]() These characters are some of the best reasons for the series' long-run existence. Carell masterfully weaves that dichotomy of boss and brainless jokester and oftentimesOblivious tactless jerk extraordinarily well, whether dealing with corporate at the top or his own workers out on the floor. The secondary characters - the office denizens not named Michael, Dwight, Jim, and Pam - both blend into the background and stand apart,Taller than their main cast counterparts, when called upon. It places him in many familiar pickles, most of his own making, as he attempts to balance an assertivenessOf position and person high above the office staff while still attempting to get low enough in his humor to get a laugh or maybe put everyone elseDown when a good looking woman makes an appearance. It was something that Gervais did so well that there would never be anEqual, but Steve Carell, playing the David Brent "counterpart" Michael Scott comes mighty close in a performance that borrows heavily because theScript borrows heavily from the original. In the early going here, right from the first episode, fans of the original will notice recycled lines and gagsAnd basic narrative concepts, including corporate's threat to close the branch down unless Michael can prove its validity over a competing branchThat is also on the chopping block. That shows in the later seasons Ken reviewed, which are wildlyUneven, less focused on the daily monotony and inane antics inside the office, and forced to sprawl beyond the focal points and comfort zonesWhich defined the first several seasons. They're the audience, in many ways, a diverseSampling of individuals who react to the office shenanigans with unique temperaments that vary wildly but often share in common the breathlessDisbelief at the dundherhead heading up Dunder Mifflin. With the Gervais series lasting only a dozen episodes and a Christmas special, it was only inevitable that the American version would have to forgeAhead and leave behind the essentials that made the British show so special. This is a quality American reproduction of an overseas classic, but try as it might, whether through brute force or the lengthEven the excellence of its cast and the time allotted for character growth, cannot quite match the majesty of Her Majesty's version of the show. The included screenshots are sourced form the first four seasons.
